Body lift spacers
Body lift spacers
Although you can use many different materials to make body lift spacers from, it doesn't mean anything will be fit for the task. New Zealand has strict rules and standards on a large majority of vehicle modifications. A body lift is one of these modifications that needs to pass LVV certification to be road legal. So body lift spacers being constructed from a suitable material is very important.
There are a range of materials body lift blocks are commonly made from, some better than others.. here are some of the more common options.
Nylon composite / hollow body lift spacers
In recent years formed hollow blocks are a common occurrence. They are commonly sold in kits here in NZ and overseas. These blocks are formed in a mold using a plastic injection molding process. Nylon when used in wet environments will suffer from moisture absorption / swelling and is also prone to cracking in cold temperatures. These blocks are often the incorrect diameter and have thin wall thicknesses meaning they will not pass LVV cert. Blocks of this style are a dangerous inferior part that is prone to failure and offer no practical benefit to the consumer. The primary benefit of this style block is the low cost of construction.
Aluminum body lift blocks
Aluminum is very strong and has fantastic chemical resistance. Aluminum preforms great in all other areas for this application but has one massive draw back.
The achilles heel of aluminum lift blocks is that they can introduce galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals into your vehicle. Most alloy lift blocks are anodized which will prevent corrosion initially. With the vehicle body shifting on its rubber body mounts during use this layer will be worn away over time as, dust, dirt and water work there way into pinch points acting like sand paper.
UHMWPE / Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene lift spacers
UHMWPE is part of the polyethylene thermoplastic family. It has extremely high wear resistance, incredible impact resistance and durability and the ability to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations without being compromised. Another bonus is its excellent chemical resistance. The above attributes make UHMWPE very well suited for use as body lift spacers. It is quite literally the perfect material for the job and for a quality kit it cant really be looked past. This is why Flatout Offroad and other companies making quality body lift kits will opt for using this material in there kits.
